Bonus AP: Eclipse Phase – The Manor

The final game in the RPPR Triptych, this Eclipse Phase one shot features a group of Firewall sentinels investigating a hidden hypercorp research facility with a dark secret. There is a short prologue scene involving the hapless test subjects of the facility that serves as a tutorial for the new players. Enjoy!

After Hours: Soul in a Box

After watching the first episode of American Gods, I wondered what other gods could be lurking in America. Caleb, Tom, and I discuss that and I review a very complex 3E module from Necromancer Games called Chaos Rising. It’s about a quest to retrieve an amulet that houses the soul of the Faceless Lord. In order to get it, the heroes must find and carry a 500 pound platinum anvil that radiates anti-magic through 2 nested demi planes. Then it gets weird. Tom also reviews After The Bomb: England.

Palladium Poisoning: Episode 6 – Rifts England

In the post-apocalyptic hellscape that is Rifts England, skyscraper sized trees are very insecure about their popularity. That’s why they bribe their friends with magic leaves, sticks, and bark. Also, King Arr’thuu (yes that is his name) wields Caliber-X to protect New Camelot from evil forces. Little does he know his girlfriend, Guinvere, is actually an alien intelligence. Well, part of one. A fragment, really. Like Mrrlyn. It’s complicated.

Bonus AP: Spirit of 77 – The Country Club

This is the second in our triptych of portrait painting themed APs. I finally got to run Spirit of 77, a 1970s grindhouse/exploitation themed PbtA RPG. In this scenario, a group of investigators look into a mysterious country club and its new patrons. It seems that the city’s elite are now beholden to a secretive group with a dark agenda…

Bonus AP: Red Markets – Cowboy Singing

Over the last month, I’ve run 3 games in 3 different systems (Red Markets, Spirit of 77, and Eclipse Phase)  for the Armitage Files group (Bill, Melissa, Jason, Renee, and Aaron). The first was in Red Markets, to show some of the players what the game was like. After they chose a job that involved a famous painting, I decided to add a painting in each of the other games I ran. This is the first of my RPG “triptych.” Enjoy!

After Hours: Defining Grimdark

Grimdark is an important characteristic of many RPGs, comics, movies, and video games these days. But what IS grimdark? How do you define it? Can you measure it? Caleb, Dan, Tom, and I got together to discuss this very important topic. Also, a listener sent me a copy of Monte Cook’s World of Darkness, so I just HAD to review it. It’s, uh, a bit of a doozy. Tom tries to review Project Twilight from the old World of Darkness as well.

Alpha Playtest of Weird Trip

I took a break from freelance writing to write a quick storytelling game. Weird Trip is a collaborative game about a traveler on a journey to…somewhere. Who that traveler is and where they stop along the way is determined by the players. I ran a playtest with Bill, Tom, and Aaron.

This is the very first draft of the rules so feedback is appreciated. Once I revise it, I’ll release it to the public in some format, but you guys get first glance at it! Enjoy!
